Dr Rahat Maitland

About Me:

Rahat is an NHS Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH). She graduated from the University of Glasgow and completed her specialist training in London at the internationally renowned Guy’s and St.Thomas’ and King’s College Hospitals. She manages all aspects of care for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This includes improving glucose control and reducing cardiovascular risk (high blood pressure and cholesterol levels and obesity).

This includes full clinical assessment and management plan as required, plus blood sampling in clinic if needed. The laboratory cost of blood tests is additional and this is provided at the time. Interpretation of blood results and a follow-up letter is included, in addition to the cost of the 1st private prescription if required (standard prescription fee £30 thereafter).

She has a specialist interest in using technologies to improve diabetes care such as insulin pumps and glucose sensors and runs a large pump service at Gartnavel Hospital. She is able to review and explain the large volumes of data generated from these devices to improve management.

Rahat also holds a medical doctorate in Diabetes in Pregnancy and completed a fellowship in Obstetric Medicine at St.Thomas’ Hospital, to strengthen her experience in caring for pregnant women with medical conditions

She runs a diabetes pre-pregnancy clinic in Glasgow and works in the diabetes and medical antenatal clinics at the QEUH. She is able to help with pre-pregnancy counselling and preparation for women with any type of diabetes. She can also assist women preparing for pregnancy who have other medical problems e.g. thyroid of blood pressure issues and can liaise with IVF clinics if required. 

In her Endocrinology practice, Rahat sees people with thyroid (under and over active), adrenal, pituitary and calcium/parathyroid gland disorders.
